Town Organizes Tours of Recycling Facilities

In March and April, the Town, in coordination with Indian River County Solid Waste Disposal District and Waste Management, organized a couple of tours of the recycling facilities in St. Lucie County, where the recyclable materials collected in the Town of Orchid are processed. Members of the Community Association's Environmental Sustainability Committee were invited to join, as were members of the Town Council and Town Staff.

County Beach Project Reaches Orchid

On Wednesday, February 24, Indian River County's Phase I major beach renourishment project in the northern 3.7 miles of Sector 3, reached the Town of Orchid. With that the project is running a little behind its original schedule, which had estimated a start date in Orchid closer to mid-February. The work conducted on Orchid's beach is expected to be completed within 4 to 6 weeks.

Bike Donation a Success in Orchid

In December, the Town Council learned about a wonderful bicycle rehab program managed by local groups Bike-Walk Indian River and Vero Cycling in partnership with Orchid Island Bikes & Kayaks. The mission of the program is to collect, rehab and recycle bikes back into the local community. Volunteers both repair bicycles free of charge for those who can’t afford the cost and rehab donated bikes to distribute among residents in need in the local area. All bikes are welcome from kid-sized to adult-sized.

Fred Marino Honored with Proclamation

Local resident Fred Marino was honored by the Town Council with a proclamation at the December 5, 2018 meeting. In 2015, Mr. Marino had volunteered to assist the Town in managing technical aspects of the beach surveyor and engineer contracts as well as the ongoing efforts by the Town to maintain a robust dune system.
