Local Planning Agency

In January 2016, the Town Council adopted an ordinance which removed the Town Council as the Local Planning Agency and established instead a separate body comprised of Orchid residents in that role. The Town Council appointed seven volunteers to the Local Planning Agency. The school board may designate a representative to serve in a non-voting capacity, but has thus far foregone that right.

The Local Planning Agency has a variety of responsibilities. The most important of these regards matters concerning the Comprehensive Plan, which the Local Planning Agency must monitor and oversee for effectiveness. The Local Planning Agency is tasked with making recommendations to the Town Council regarding the adoption of any changes to the Comprehensive Plan. The Local Planning Agency also reviews proposed land development regulations, codes, and amendments. The Town Council may assign the Local Planning Agency any other functions, duties or responsibilities deemed appropriate.

Annually in December, the Town Clerk seeks applications from interested residents, who'd like to be considered to serve. Terms last for two years, unless there is a remainder of a term to fill. Look out for an invitation by email or reach out to the Town Clerk for information.

The Local Planning Agency's members are subject to the Sunshine Law and meetings of this advisory board are open to public attendance and participation.
