Tropical Storm Nicole: Local Impacts

Forecast storm track of Tropical Storm Nicole from November 8 at 7 p.m.

Indian River County, along with 33 other counties, have been issued a Declaration of Emergency from the Florida Governor in anticipation of impacts from Tropical Storm Nicole. Sustained tropical storm force winds are likely to reach our area in the afternoon on Wednesday, November 9. Nicole, expected to arrive on Florida's central east coast as a Category 1 Hurricane, is forecast to affect our area directly for about 24 hours. Remember that high winds and heavy rain will precede landfall, which is still anticipated during the night into Thursday morning.

Voluntary evacuation of the barrier island, along with low lying areas east of U.S. 1, was issued by Indian River County effective 7 a.m. on Wednesday, November 9. The Emergency Operations Center of Indian River County advises evacuation travel of tens of miles, rather than hundreds of miles.

Law enforcement will monitor wind speeds - bridge closures occur when sustained winds reach 40-45 miles an hour, but are handled in such a manner to ensure the bridges are open as much as possible, so decisions are made based on live data.

No recycling collection will be available this week, but will resume the following week. Trash collection has not been officially canceled by Waste Pro, but is highly unlikely to occur on the usual Thursday service day this week, November 10. Keep carts stowed.

Indian River County's information hotline for storm-related questions to be available to residents 24 hours a day for the duration of the storm - (772) 226-4000.
