Public Workshops on Route 510 & US 1 Intersection

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is interested in public input regarding two alternatives they’ve studied to address problems at the intersection of Route 510 and U.S. 1, particularly congestion. The County is growing and this crossing is already particularly busy.

Very briefly, Alternative 1 is an at-grade solution that features the adding of lanes to enlarge the overall capacity and size of the intersection, while Alternative 2 features a flyover that would take east- and west-bound traffic on Route 510 up over the railroad and intersection thereby reducing the traffic on the crossing below. There is a third alternative, but it is not considered feasible by FDOT.

Based on the preliminary information provided by FDOT, the Town Council for Orchid has a unanimous preference for Alternative 2. This is in contrast to FDOT’s preference for Alternative 1, which is less complex and less costly to construct.

Later this month FDOT will hold a couple of public information workshops to present the studied alternatives. Residents are encouraged to participate, as this intersection is of great importance to all communities on the northern barrier island.

  • February 27 starting at 6 p.m. This workshop is offered in a virtual format. To attend the virtual workshop, register in advance. You will receive an email with a link to log in on the day of the virtual meeting. If using a mobile device, the free “GoToWebinar” application is required to attend.
  • February 29 starting at 5:30 p.m. held in-person in Indian River County’s Administration Building B, room 501 on the ground floor behind the stairwell, at 1800 27th Street in Vero Beach.

The same information will be presented at both workshops.

The purpose of the workshops is to inform the public regarding the project and the proposed alternatives, and, very importantly, to gather public input. You are encouraged to ask questions and provide feedback. Please be aware that the crossing of Route 510 and 58th Street are also part of the project’s scope and will be discussed in the workshops as well. The project is in preliminary stages and it will be a long process to construction, but early feedback is the most effective feedback.

Feedback can also be emailed to FDOT Project Manager, Maria Formoso, P.E., P.M.P. at maria.formoso@dot.state.fl.us.
