TOWN OF ORCHID – ELECTIONS Town Elections Changes The State of Florida moved its primary from February 5 to January 29 so the state would have a more prominent role in selecting presidential nominees. Due to this change, municipalities needed to make a decision on holding their elections on January 29, retain the March election and bear the full cost of the election as it is considered a special election since it does not fall on a general election date, or move their elections to the presidential election date in November. The Town of Orchid Town Council at its August meeting moved the Town's election to November. This decision was decreed by Ordinance No. 2007-05 by an amendment to the Town Charter. Those whose terms expire in 2008 will remain in their seats until the November election date. In November 2008, the four-year terms of Town Council members C. Warren Crandall and Richard G. Dunlop expired. During the Town election qualifying period, Richard G. Dunlop and William H. Troxell filed with the Town's Supervisor of Elections to run for the open seats. With two open seats and only two filed prospective candidates, the County Supervisor of Elections declared the two candidates elected to the Town Council. Therefore, in compliance with Florida state law, there was no election for Town Council members on November 4, 2008. Messers Dunlop and Troxell took the oath of office at the Town Council meeting on November 5, 2008. In November 2010, the four-year terms of Town Council members Sue Joyce, Bud Oatway, and Paul Johnson will expire. If you are interested in becoming a candidate for that General Election, which will be held on November 2, 2010, the Town Clerk has prepared some general information to get you started.
